Okay.

You guys (well, some of you, anyway) have been asking for this for several years, so we're going to try it out.

Here it is:

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

PRE-REGISTRATION FOR FLUKE 2012 IS NOW OPEN!

There are some things you need to know:

It costs more this year. It will cost you $15 for a space if you use this pre-registration. The reason for this is the fees charged by the online registration site. There may be a better and less expensive way to do this, and we're going to continue to look for one, but for 2012, the pre-registration is going to cost you $15. We're still committed to making FLUKE cost as little money as possible.

A pre-registration gets you the same thing buying a table space got you in the past. When you pre-register, you are registering for one half of a six foot table. We're going to let the pre-registrants in before we open the doors to the public, so there's going to be time for you to find a table near the people you want to be near. We promise.

A pre-registration gets one person in. If you're bringing someone with you who did not pre-register, he or she will have to pay the general admission fee, which is still going to be $2.00. We'll let that person in at the earlier time. Don't worry.

We are opening 60 (sixty) spaces for pre-registration. We generally have about 75. If there are any spaces left after the Sponsors are in place and everyone pre-registers, we'll let you know. There's a good possibility that there may be some "walk-up" table spaces available on the day of the show. Keep watching the FLUKE website and Twitter for more information.

OktöberFLUKE update!

Okay, so we've had several people register for OktöberFLUKE so far, and it's going to be awesome. BUT HERE IS THE THING: Spaces are still available, and rather than having unfilled spaces the day of the show and a waiting list for the Record sals and Indie Craft Fair, we're going to cut off our registrations at 5:00 pm on Wednesday the 5th of October.

I am going to repeat that in all caps: if you want a table for OktöberFLUKE, YOU MUST REGISTER ONLINE AT an old website that is no longer functional (edit - January 2012) BY 5:00 PM ON WEDNESDAY THE 5TH OF OCTOBER. THERE WILL BE NO REGISTRATIONS ACCEPTED AFTER THIS TIME. THERE WILL BE NO WALK-UP REGISTRATION ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT.

This will give us time to re-allocate our non-reserved spaces to vendors on the waiting lists for the record sale and craft show.

Hey, guys. Still working on the pre-registration function for OktöberFLUKE, and it is going to happen soon. But, as a way to sort of get a picture of the level of interest in this thing, please leave a comment on this post if you're thinking about getting a table at OktöberFLUKE.

Please keep in mind that leaving a comment here does not guarantee a table. This is only an informal survey to get a very general idea about how much space we will actually need in the room on October 15th.

Man, the guys running the Athens Popfest have really put together an awesome show for this October. It features performances from, among others, Bob Mould, Throwing Muses, The Olivia Tremor Control, Man or Astroman? and The Dead Milkmen. Seriously!

I'm really looking forward to going to these shows, and the full line-up hasn't been announced.

But here's an announcement that FLUKE is going to make:

On Saturday, the 15th of October 2011, The Athens Popfest will present OktöberFLUKE.

We've "teamed up" with the Popfest to put together a small press / comix / 'zine show as part of the Popfest festivities. This show will be held in conjunction with (and in the same gigantic room as) a DIY craft show and record fair. It's going to be absolutely amazing.

Now let's get this straight: This isn't taking the place of FLUKE. FLUKE will still happen in April of 2012 at the 40 Watt club, and it'll still be amazing. What's going on here is that the awesome people at Athens Popfest have given us the chance to work with them to organize a small press event as a part of all the other incredible stuff that's going on in Athens that week.

The table cost will be a little more than regular FLUKE. It's going to be $15 for half of an 8 foot table. Still totally cheap, right? But check this business out: The organizers of the Popfest have decided to give a discount on the purchase of a 4-day pass to anyone who buys a table for this event. These passes normally cost $70, which is a great deal for all of these shows. BUT if you buy a table for $15, you can buy your pass for only $55.

Wait, did we just say that if you were planning on buying a 4-day pass to the Athens Popfest that you could buy that pass and get a table to show off your comics and 'zines on Saturday for the same price? Yes, indeed, we did say that!

I know all of you want to sign up for a table right now, but you can't. Sorry. We're still getting our act together for the pre-registration. Did you read that? PRE-REGISTRATION. Dudes, FLUKE is taking a step into the future here!

Okay, so for the TL;DR crowd (that means "too long; didn't read". I just found out about that last week) here's the breakdown:

*OktöberFLUKE - A small press comix & 'zine show as part of the Athens Popfest will happen from 10 - 6 on October 15th at the Classic Center in downtown Athens, GA.

*Half of an 8' table will cost $15, and if you buy one you get a $15 discount on your 4-day Athens Popfest pass.

*We will open pre-registration for these table on the internet. That will happen very soon.

Tables and spaces will be provided for mini-comic artists and distributors on a first-come, first-served basis. All attendees are welcome to bring enough work to fill a small (3' x 4') table space. FLUKE is a mini-comic festival that has been organized by Athens-area comic artists, underground publishers and their enthusiasts since 2002. Conceived as a venue for the discussion and exchange of timely ideas related to mini-comics, zines, and other independent publications, FLUKE is not a large comic convention or merchandising-saturated extravaganza. This isn't to say we don't like our share of stuff—'cause we do. However, we have kept the organization of the event as simple as possible to ensure that it remains focused on work and ideas rather than merchandising.

Are you coming to FLUKE this year? Here is some information you need...

Okay, so you know how in the past, it cost $5.00 to get into FLUKE, no matter who you are or what you were doing (unless you were a sponsor)? This was the same for people who wanted a table and for people who did not want a table. Five dollars. That's it.

Did you notice how that was written in the past tense? That's because we're changing it, but in order to do so, we need your help. Okay, so here's the deal:
General admission to FLUKE 2011 will be $2.00 (two dollars). Obviously, we would prefer to be paid in two dollar bills, but we'll take what we can get.

BUT WAIT. I can tell you are thinking "Does this mean that tables are only two dollars now as well?" Nope. They're not. Here's the next part:
Table space at FLUKE 2011 will cost $8.00 (eight dollars). But see, here's the thing: Most people who get a table share it with one other lady or dude, so this means that if you and your friend want to go in on a table at FLUKE, the total cost is still ten dollars. See what we did there?

This is an experiment. We don't know how it is going to work. But we're trying it, because we want to lower the cost for people who are coming in to just look at stuff. In order for it to work, we are, as earlier stated, going to need your help.

We ran out of table space FAST last year. Now, the 40 Watt is at least twice as big as Ciné, so that means twice as many tables (maybe more). But we're still probably going to run through them fast. Here are ways you can help us:

*Remember that when you get a table for $8.00, you're paying for half of a 6 foot table. Please be nice about sharing with others. Everyone always has been nice about this in the past, so there's really no reason for me to think this won't happen, but it's still a good reminder.

*Remember that tables are still first-come, first-served. We may experiment with table reservation in the future, but let us get through FLUKE 2011 first and then we'll see what's up. That kind of thing takes all kind of effort and websites and PayPal accounts and professionalism. That's the kind of stuff we don't have a lot of. Maybe Wizard will buy us and then you can get all of those things.

*Remember that Wizard is not trying to buy us and that that was just a joke. Which isn't to say that we wouldn't sell out in half a heartbeat if they came a-knockin', but Oh, God, what am I saying. I am tired and it has been a long day.

*We don't know how we are going to take your money. We may have 2 separate lines at the door, one for tables and one for not tables, but this may split up groups and cause difficulty with people loading in. But that's your problem, not ours. Wow, that was a really rude thing to say. I apologize. We may also just let everyone in for $2.00 and then walk around and collect $6.00 from every half table in the place. This is how that they do it at the J&J Flea Market (they charge more for a table, though), and if it's good enough for them, it's certainly good enough for FLUKE.

*Please be nice. Always be nice. Remember that part in "Roadhouse"? It is very important. Even when Ben Gazzara has one of his minions drive a monster truck through your car dealership, be nice.

Today's issue of The Red & Black, the student-run University of Georgia newspaper, has a calendar listing (scroll down to Saturday) that refers to FLUKE as an event for "those who don't get laid enough". So I guess if you're, you know...satisfied, then maybe you should stay home?

Nah, I'm just kidding, we want you to come to FLUKE no matter how much you're "getting laid." Also, if you're, you know, a rational, thinking human who doesn't have to tie everything back to your sexuality and would prefer not to make the frequency of your "getting laid" an issue, you're welcome as well. Also, kids are welcome. We promise not to talk about "getting laid" in front of them. Because we are all kinds of classy.

It's immediately clear that the artists had fun adding their own touch to the basic lay-out. We felt compelled to compare each page to see the differing way each contributor interpreted the characters and environment: In some panels, the male is portrayed as skinny coward, in others, a heroic victim; similarly, the depictions of the demonic female vary from powerful super-villain to grotesque monster.

Here's this year's FLUKE poster which will be wallpapering Athens in the next week or so. This year's FLUKE artwork is brought to you by Athens own David Mack.

If you are awesome, and we know you are, then you'll want to click here to download the high resolution (6.71 MB .pdf) version of the FLUKE 2010 flyer, print a few off and stick 'em up anywhere nerds are likely to see them.

We'd especially appreciate the help in Savannah in and around the Savannah College of Art and Design, and also on the Atlanta SCAD campus, but really, anywhere in the world is just fine with us. The city and state aren't on the flyer, as it was made for local use, but I'm pretty sure anyone who would be willing to help us with this is good enough at design to stick an "Athens, GA" on there somewhere. Or at least scrawl it on the printed version with a Sharpie.

Obviously, though, please observe all local rules, laws and ordinances pertaining to the posting of handbills. We don't wanna get hit with some nasty fine just because some Friend of FLUKE in Des Moines or Sault Ste. Marie got all overzealous with the flyerin' and wheatpasted a couple dozen on the mayor's house or whatever.

Ciné Bar/Café/Cinema (www.athenscine.com)
Ciné screens a variety of intriguing films from a broad spectrum of countries and cultures, including the newest domestic and foreign productions as well as movie classics, retrospectives and documentaries. The selection includes well-known crossover independent films and small budget films, discoveries from festivals and local productions. Ciné also offers space for special events, and FLUKE is excited to make Ciné its home for the 2010 show.

FLUKE’s STATEMENT OF PURPOSE/ MISSION
FLUKE is a mini-comic festival that has been organized by Athens-area comic artists, underground publishers and their enthusiasts since 2002. Conceived as a venue for the discussion and exchange of timely ideas related to mini-comics, zines, and other independent publications, FLUKE is not a large comic convention or merchandising-saturated extravaganza. This isn't to say we don't like our share of stuff—'cause we do. However, we have kept the organization of the event as simple as possible to ensure that it remains focused on work and ideas rather than merchandising.

So for some reason the wizards who run FLUKE, or one of them, at least, thought it would be a fun thing to do to start one of them Tumblr things even though nobody on the whole of the internet has quite worked out what Tumblr is supposed to actually be for.

Look, all we know is that the cool kids with the skinny jeans and the sideways haircuts all have those Tumblr websites, and we want to be cool, too. Maybe we'll sign up for Friendster and Orkut next. Everyone knows that blogspot's mainly for illegally downloading music, anyway.

2010 FLUKE Comics Anthology- Something Different

So, the book is underway. It's happening, but instead of begging for submissions from the four corners of the globe, I came up with a crackpot plan to pencil a book length story and hand it over to local Athens comics folks to ink. Last night a bunch of us met for our regular Wednesday Night Drawing Getogether and I threw twenty-four penciled pages on the floor and nine Athens artists grabbed a couple pages each to ink.

Apparently, the video below had one of the computer characters saying that FLUKE is on the 10th of April. THIS IS NOT TRUE.

FLUKE 2010 WILL BE ON APRIL 17th.

Sorry everyone. We have, at great expense, re-shot the video to contain the correct date. Special thanks to Friend of FLUKE Brad McGinty for pointing this error out to us. Brad will receive 400 FLUKE-BUX which may be redeemed for 3 orange Skittles on the day of the show! Taste the rainbow, Brad! (or, at least the orange part...)
